AI-manipulated photos and recordings

One of the most popular uses for AI is generating images and audio. Scammers can use videos posted on public platforms to make fake voice recordings of your loved ones asking for help, or use photos posted publicly to send fake mugshots of a victim’s family or friends. Targeting individuals with these photo- and audio-based scams is becoming even more popular than phishing. Grandparent scams, where perpetrators send fake mugshots of a victim’s grandchild in an attempt to extort money for ‘bail’ are also on the rise.

These very convincing scams may also induce victims to part with larger sums of money than more common text-based scams, as they seem more real and trustworthy.

Norton 360 with Genie includes a scam assistant that answers any questions you might have about new or existing types of online fraud. Norton 360 plans that include LifeLock also include Safe Call and Safe Email to protect you from this growing threat.

It’s well known that it can be harder for older adults to spot scams, but what about your kids? With Norton 360 with Genie, you get Parental Control to keep your kids safe online. Norton may also be able to warn you if you have already been the victim of cybercrime. They offer dark web monitoring to alert you if your personal information has been leaked to the Dark Web.

Phishing attacks

Traditional phishing emails can be easy to spot, with spelling or grammatical errors, formatting issues, and dubious-looking email addresses. However, with AI, scammers can correct many of these issues and make their writing appear more professional and more credible.

While these scammers often target major businesses, they also spread a wide net for personal information, including credit card numbers. The number of ransomware incidents reported to IC3 last year was up 18%, and the cost of those attacks increased by 74%, totaling $59.6 million. With AI-powered scams becoming more sophisticated and more frequent, it’s more important than ever to ensure that you have extra protection to spot scams.

You can protect yourself and your family’s devices with Norton 360 with Genie, which safeguards you against online scams by blocking hackers and fake websites while allowing you to browse privately on a VPN. Norton can check suspicious content for potential threats, scams, hackers, viruses, malware, and ransomware.

Fake websites

Scammers also use AI to create fake websites and will often advertise them on social media or in phony emails. These ‘stores’ entice shoppers to buy with heavy discounts or limited-time sales that pressure you to make a purchase.

If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Be wary of these high-pressure offers, as they’re a way to get you to share your email address and a commonly used password. These sites often use an AI chatbot that will prompt you to share personal info.

With Norton 360 with Genie, you can shop more safely. Genie uses AI for good, detecting if websites are scams and can answers questions you have about the scam.
